New Malden
Fountain Roundabout Improvements
Update July 2023
We are delighted to announce that a design team of local architects from Hayatsu Architects, Hortus Collective and 121 Collective have won the 'A Gateway to New Malden’ competition.
A jury made up of industry experts, community stakeholders and the council used the local feedback received at the engagement event and online survey, alongside other success criteria, to choose the winning scheme. The team’s design “Unearthing New Malden” was judged to provide the best solution to enhance the green space at the Fountain Roundabout, increase biodiversity and access to nature, and create an inclusive and attractive public space for the town centre that celebrates New Malden’s character, culture, and heritage.
This is only the starting point for engagement, and the design team will be working with local stakeholders, residents, businesses, the council and councillors to take the winning concept and create a final design. Further information on future engagements will be available in coming months.
Update June 2023
We had a fantastic response to the design competition we launched in partnership with the London Festival of Architecture to transform the public realm in the vicinity of Fountain Roundabout. 41 applications were received for the 'A Gateway to New Malden' contest, and now have a shortlist of six design teams.

Thank you to all of those that took part in the engagement event or gave their feedback as part of the online survey. The transformation of this area of New Malden is just one part of the council's efforts to work with the local community to ensure the town centre thrives, and there will be further opportunities to be involved in community art projects and activities over the summer.
Update April 2023
Following our last update, as you may remember, Storm Eunice in early 2022 caused a large amount of damage to the existing fountain, as well as the large tree of heaven formerly located on the pocket space. Since then, we have been working to understand the impact and extent of the damage, and looking at options that; respond to the damage, incorporate feedback from previous consultations and provide a scheme that meets the needs and aspirations of the local community.
With this in mind, we are pleased to announce that Kingston Council has partnered with the London Festival of Architecture (LFA) to launch an exciting new competition. The competition is asking for designs that will create an inclusive and attractive public space in the heart of the town centre, including the re-landscaping of the roundabout and neighbouring green space. Design considerations will also need to address the damaged fountain and could suggest opportunities for a new monument which will signal a gateway into the town, whilst also celebrating the character, culture, and heritage of the area.
Six shortlisted teams will be announced, and their entries will be displayed as part of an exhibition in New Malden in June 2023 that everyone can attend. The local community will be able to provide their feedback and comments, which will then feed into the final judging stage, with a panel consisting of local community, council and industry representatives.
