Annexes
If your home has an annexe, the annexe may qualify for a Council Tax discount.
Annexe exemption
You may not have to pay any council tax for your annexe if it is:
- empty, and forms part of a single property and cannot be let separately or occupied due to planning conditions
- occupied by a relative who is one or more of the following:
- over 65
- substantially or permanently disabled
- severely mentally impaired
Annexe discounts
If your home has an annexe, the annexe may qualify for a 50% discount Council Tax discount if it is:
- occupied by a relative
- used by someone that lives in the main home
How to apply
Use our general enquiries form to make your claim. Tell us:
- your Council Tax account number
- the address where you wish to claim the discount
- if you are applying for a full exemption or a 50% discount
- how you qualify for the reduction, for example the name of the person occupying, and how they meet the criteria for the discount
If you receive a discount by mistake or are no longer entitled to a discount, you must let us know within 21 days, or you could be fined or prosecuted.

We review all discounts and exemptions each year. You will receive a review letter, which you must complete and send back to us or lose any reduction.
