Kingston Green Business Challenge Case Studies
IQ in IT’s Green Business Challenge: A Sustainability Success Story
In the complex world of IT solutions, IQ in IT provides cutting-edge solutions to SMEs locally in Kingston and globally. Their role as a technology partner involves not only optimising IT infrastructure but also delving into ways to enhance the businesses they support, all while championing sustainability.
The decision to embark on their sustainability journey through the Green Business Challenge and gain a Green Mark certificate wasn't just a strategic move, it was a commitment to revolutionise the IT industry’s environmental impact.
Due to Katerina Damcova's, CEO of IQ in IT, advocacy for sustainable practices and recognition of their inherent environmental challenges, certification became an inevitable and purposeful progression. Improving their knowledge of sustainability issues was among the key motivations for IQ in IT to participate in the initiative.
Tackling barriers to sustainability
Educating employees about their waste footprint, fostering a culture of reuse, and addressing concerns about packaging were all obstacles they encountered along their sustainability journey. Encouraging landlords to adopt sustainable technology, implementing an effective heating system, and addressing the intricacies of electric vehicle infrastructure were among other ongoing challenges.
Kingston Council grant fuels sustainable office enhancements
Replacing radiator valves to be able to keep the heating off outside working hours and maintain a constant temperature were among the key improvements made as part of the initiative. Installation of an energy-efficient dishwasher, moss art, a live wall outside their office, and a compost bin were the other improvements taken up by the business.
“The grant received from the Kingston Council as part of Green Business Challenge allowed us to execute more of our sustainability plans.”
“Certification brought many unexpected benefits for us all.”
Following accreditation, IQ in IT experienced numerous benefits. Networking opportunities blossomed at events, accreditation became a sourcing asset and the team’s commitment to sustainability resonated with stakeholders. Nature’s return and mental health improvements were reported, as well as a tangible demonstration of sustainability commitment.
A visible yearly improvement in sustainable thinking and the introduction of a Green IT Newsletter fostered a collective understanding of environmental issues, aligning stakeholders with their sustainability goals.
Internally, Green Mark principles heavily impacted employee awareness. The three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) became ingrained in their ethos. Environmental training initiatives, preservation-oriented volunteering days, and a commitment to recycling and reallocating equipment demonstrated a holistic approach to sustainability, empowering employees to be active contributors.
“Green Mark Certification emerged not just as a badge but as a cornerstone for our long-term sustainability goals. It held us accountable, fostering a culture of continuous measurement and improvement.”
This foundation catalysed critical thinking, challenging the team to explore facets of their business that might have otherwise gone unexamined.
Reflecting on their journey, IQ in IT shares valuable insights. They advocate for businesses to embrace the Green Mark journey early, emphasising its eye-opening nature and role in stimulating improvements.
“Operating sustainably is positioned as a necessity for a sustainable future, and the certification, beyond being a current commitment, is seen as a future prerequisite. The sooner businesses engage, the more accountable and resilient they become.”
IQ in IT’s Green Business Challenge journey is a testament to the transformative power of intentional and comprehensive sustainability practices in the IT industry. It showcases how a commitment to green initiatives positively impacts the environment and elevates a business, its stakeholders, and the industry as a whole.
Looking ahead, IQ in IT suggests that the Council could support future sustainability efforts by organising events, offering grants, and connecting businesses with expert advice.
