Kingston Green Business Challenge Case Studies

JNDC’s Path to Sustainability Through the Green Business Challenge

JNDC, specialists in design for manufacturing, embarked on a journey towards sustainability through their commitment to innovation and an environmentally responsible work environment.

Joining Kingston’s Green Business Challenge pilot helped them recognise their potential to enhance their overall sustainability efforts through expert advice from Green Mark and financial support from the council.

Accreditation and improvements

JNDC found the accreditation process useful because it contributed to a significant cultural change within their business. Sustainability has now become ingrained in their company culture, influencing daily operations and decision-making processes.

The team continuously encourages their clients to prioritise reducing the environmental impact of products manufactured from their designs. Participating in the initiative, the team achieved a substantial reduction in electricity consumption.

They identified two energy-intensive pieces of equipment: the old air conditioning system and the workshop air compressor. By replacing these outdated items, they were able to achieve significant energy savings.

Fostering sustainable behaviours

The team already had a positive mindset towards sustainability. However, the accreditation process provided a structured framework for sustainability initiatives and improved the alignment of employee practices with their sustainability goals.

Key takeaways

Despite operating from rented premises with no outdoor space, they gained valuable insights into making meaningful improvements. Access to funding and expert guidance allowed them to execute these changes effectively, minimising disruptions to their daily operations and creating an improved working environment for their employees.

“We are proud to have achieved Green Mark certification through our participation in the Kingston Upon Thames ‘Green Business’ challenge, further developing our environmental values and taking action to minimise our own environmental impact. Paperless working, virtual meetings, reduced travel and reliance on fossil fuels, and responsible purchasing have made reducing our impact easier than ever.”

The team strongly advocates for other businesses to implement similar sustainability measures because energy efficiency improvements can make a significant difference, especially for small, independent businesses lacking expertise and funding.

Future sustainability goals

Looking forward, JNDC has remarkable goals for the rest of their sustainability journey. They plan to extend their impact by actively participating in corporate volunteering initiatives and aim to collaborate closely with their suppliers and clients to reduce their Scope 3 emissions.

By reducing their ecological footprint and contributing to a greener, more sustainable future, JNDC has demonstrated a firm commitment to sustainability and cultural transformation.
