    From the former slave Cesar Picton who became a successful coal merchant in the borough in the 1880’s, to the Windrush generation in the mid-twentieth century, all the way to the present day - with one of the few Race and Equalities Councils in the country, and the annual Kingston Carnival which is a key part of the borough’s cultural life.... Kingston’s black communities have played a very important role in shaping the history of the borough and I am very proud that this is a place committed to valuing and celebrating the contributions of all.

    I was impressed by the high standard and professionalism of all the teams who presented their ideas and detailed plans to the panel.... As someone who has helped maintain the space outside Kingston Environment Centre for several years, I am very pleased with the winning design in that the ‘berms’ will provide an effective screen from the busy road, existing planting will be maintained and materials used will be as sustainable as possible.... I look forward to the transformation of this space and Kingston Environment Centre Directors will support in whatever way we can.”

  • Kingston supports calls for improvements to the Healthy Start scheme for families and mums-to-be.

    The NHS Healthy Start card provides money to low-income mums-to-be and families with children of 4 and under specifically for healthy food, milk, baby formula and free vitamins.... In addition, the current Healthy Start allowance of £8.50 per eligible household with an infant under 1 year of age is now not enough to cover the full cost of any infant formula on the market.”

    Inspectors visited the borough between 4 and 6 October 2022 in a follow up to the area’s last inspection in November 2018....
