Report an abandoned vehicle
Find out how to report an abandoned vehicle.
Identifying abandoned vehicles
A vehicle is abandoned if it is untaxed plus at least 1 of the following:
- is stationary for a significant amount of time
- is damaged or run down
- is burnt out
- contains waste
We cannot take action if you believe the vehicle is abandoned by a local resident or any other person. We cannot remove the vehicle as it is ‘owned’ and not abandoned.
What happens once reported
If you report an abandoned vehicle to us we will inspect the vehicle and make an assessment. If assessed as being abandoned a notice will be placed on the vehicle. The notice period varies from 24 hours to 15 days.
If the vehicle has not moved or has not been claimed once the notice period has ended, we will then issue a destruction order, and the vehicle will be removed.
We will try to remove burnt-out vehicles immediately.
If the vehicle is blocking a driveway and you are trying to leave the property, you will need to report this to the police.
Make a report using the map
If you need to report an abandoned vehicle, you can report it by using the map.
You can:
- use the search bar on the map to search for a location, address or street
- click on the map to place a pin
- fill in the short form
Make a report using the form
If you have accessibility requirements or difficulties using the map you can make a report using the form. Note that the form will be reviewed manually and may take longer to action.
Recycle your car
It is illegal to dump a vehicle in the street. If you need to get rid of your car you can use the free CarTakeBack scheme.
