Kingston Council moving towards cashless parking
From April, it will no longer be possible to pay by cash for parking in Kingston, with the exception of CattleMarket, Bittoms and The Rose car parks, where cash payment will be retained.
Customers will be able to pay through a mobile phone using the RingGo service or by card. Blue badge parking will still be free, for up to three hours or as signposted.
There remains a way to still pay by cash by using the PayPoint services of convenience stores. Customers will need the location code of where the vehicle is parked, and allowance will be made for the journey on foot to reach the shop. There will be no requirement to return to your car to display a ticket.
There will not be a price difference between payment methods.
Cllr Hilary Gander, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainable Transport at Kingston Council, said:
“Increasingly, society is moving to cashless transactions. Many councils are now moving to cashless parking, some to fully mobile phone only, some like Kingston to mobile phone and card transactions. The benefits of this change to Kingston is a safer borough, as well as a saving of £40,000 per annum which can be better spent on other vital services.”
