Former councillor Julie Haines appointed Honorary Alderman of Kingston

A former councillor who helped improve road safety and saved a local post office has been made an Honorary Alderman of the Royal Borough of Kingston.

Julie Haines served as a councillor for both Cambridge and Coombe Vale wards between 1986 and 2006. Over her 20 years in office, she became known as a dedicated and passionate advocate for her community.

During her time at the council, Julie chaired the Social Services Committee and was actively involved in a number of important community campaigns. These included securing four new pedestrian crossings in her ward, saving New Malden Post Office from closure, and supporting the creation of a teaching pool at the Malden Centre.

When she was first elected in 1986, Julie was appointed Chair of the Social Services Committee and was part of a new group of councillors who brought fresh energy to the chamber. One notable memory shared during the meeting recalled how, in 1989, Julie brought her three-month-old daughter Emma to a council meeting in a Moses basket - along with a friend for babysitting duties - so she could take part in an important vote.

Even after stepping down from elected office, Julie has remained active in the community and is currently President Elect of New Malden Rotary. A school teacher by profession, she has continued to champion causes related to education, health, and women’s rights.

Under Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the title of Honorary Alderman may be conferred on former councillors who have served a minimum of 12 years. The title was conferred on Julie at the meeting of full council on 1 April 2025.
