Kingston remembers: honouring Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday across the borough
Kingston’s communities joined together to pay their respects across the Royal Borough on Sunday, 10 November 2024.
Residents gathered in Kingston, New Malden, Surbiton and Chessington to reflect and remember the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces community, while today many people across the borough marked Armistice Day itself with a two-minute silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month.
This year there was also an additional service at New Malden’s War Memorial, marking the 100th anniversary of its unveiling (8 November 1924).
Communities united across faiths, cultures, and backgrounds to pay their respects to all those who served in the Armed Forces and commemorate those who lost their lives in service to their country. The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston, as well as the Bishop of Kingston, Armed Forces representatives, councillors and senior council officers attended the events.
Remembrance Sunday also traditionally marks the beginning of the Inter Faith Week, to encourage people to remember together the contributions of all faiths and beliefs, contemplating how best to create a just, peaceful, and harmonious world.
In 2018 Kingston Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant, a promise by the nation that members of the armed forces will be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy, and society they serve or have served. It’s part of our effort to create a fairer Kingston by reducing inequalities and increasing opportunities for everyone.
