Residents are encouraged to take part in a month-long campaign, aimed at helping people understand and adapt to the challenges climate change brings.

“Sustainable September” is returning to Kingston borough for a third year. It’s a point in the calendar where we can celebrate the work taking place to create a greener, safer and fairer borough for current and future generations.

This year the campaign will focus on providing practical information and tips to help us all adapt to the challenges which climate change presents, now and in the near future.

It is already bringing extreme weather events including prolonged hotter, drier conditions, as well as torrential rain and wetter, warmer winters, which can have severe consequences for the human and natural environments around the world, including in our borough.

Councillor Ian Manders, Portfolio Holder for Climate Action, Biodiversity and Planning Policy, said:

“Work is being undertaken to tackle the causes of climate change, but we have to adapt to the challenges to the environment and people’s health that climate change is already presenting.

“I’d encourage everyone to get involved in the campaign to help our borough respond to the climate change challenge”.

As in previous years there will be council and community-led activities taking place, free to attend, along with a number of interactive challenges in partnership with organisations including Habitats & Heritage, Kingston Hive and Traid.

A variety of topics will be covered throughout the month, from flood awareness, to coping with excessive heat in the home, and conserving water to planting for pollinators.
