Kingston celebrates a summer of sport and fun with the launch of free ParkPlay

Kingston Council is launching its first weekly ParkPlay on Saturday 17 August at the Sunray Community Centre in Tolworth. ParkPlay is two hours of FREE active community games for people of all ages.

Tolworth ParkPlay follows the highly successful borough Sports Day on 20 July

Kingston Council is launching its first ParkPlay location on Saturday 17 August, and every Saturday morning, at the Sunray Community Centre in Tolworth from 10am to 12 noon.

ParkPlay is two hours of FREE active community games for people of all ages with the aim of building happier and healthier communities by getting out and playing! Participants need to register just once before coming along.

ParkPlay is run by the local community for the community and supported by the National Lottery and Sport England. Kingston plans to extend ParkPlay with other locations in the borough and is actively looking for community interest and volunteers to make this possible. The announcement of ParkPlay Tolworth follows hot on the heels of a highly successful borough Sports Day on Saturday 20 July. Kingston Council partnered with many local sports clubs, and was supported by the Path to Paris programme to celebrate all things active and enable children, families and people of all ages to meet with clubs and try out activities for free.

The Sports/Path to Paris event was hosted by Places Leisure at the Weir Archer Athletics and Fitness Centre, with local clubs providing free activities including Archery, Bowls, Croquet, Kettlebell Training, Capoeira, Tennis, Football, Golf, Adaptive cycling, Rowing, Table Tennis, Athletics and Box fit. We were especially thrilled to have Paralympian Archer, Mel Clarke, join us to provide expert tuition.

Councillor Andrew Wooldridge, Tolworth Ward and Kingston Council ambassador and Trustee Director for the London Youth Games, said:

"We are very proud that Kingston’s first ParkPlay will be in Tolworth, providing our community with a weekly outdoor place to meet-up and participate in fun activities for the benefit of physical and mental health.

"I also attended the borough Sports Day and it was fantastic to see so many local clubs and community groups come together to showcase their activities and skills. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for residents of all ages to engage in free physical activities and try new things.

"It was a truly special day that highlighted the vibrant and active community spirit in Kingston and we would like to thank everyone who gave their time and skills to make this happen.”

Partners supporting Sports Day were:
Our Parks, AFC Kingston Youth, Amir Wrestling, Fulham FC Foundation, Graham Spicer Table Tennis Club, Kingston Association for the Blind, Kingston Community Football, Kingston Rowing Club, London Kettlebell Club, Malden Lime Bowling Club, Mel Clarke Archery, Minima Yacht Club, Our Parks / Our Camps, Surbiton Croquet Club, Square 1 Cafe, QMC School of Capoeira, Wheels for All and the Weir Archer Academy.

We were also delighted to be supported by Square 1 Cafe from New Era Community Projects, who provided free refreshments to all participants on the day.
