Kingston Council celebrates internationally recognised award for Canbury Gardens

Canbury Gardens has been awarded the coveted Green Flag Award as it is officially recognised as one of the country’s best parks.

Kingston is celebrating the news that Canbury Gardens has achieved Green Flag accreditation - the international quality mark for parks and green spaces. The award is reflective of the council’s commitment to protecting and enhancing Kingston’s green spaces for current and future generations.

The award noted the space’s public facilities and range of play equipment that is used by the community and that it is used by a range of Friends Groups to host monthly meetings where community issues are discussed.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE said:

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved at Canbury Gardens in achieving a Green Flag Award.

“Canbury Gardens is a vital green space for the community in Kingston, bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles.

“The staff and volunteers do so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”

The work of the Friends of Queen’s Promenade group has also been recognised with a Green Flag Community Award for their dedication to caring for and improving the riverside.

Councillor Noel Hadjimichael, Ward Councillor for Canbury Gardens Ward said:

“Canbury Gardens is a special place which attracts thousands of visitors each year, not just from Kingston, but from each corner of the Borough, London and beyond.

“We’re incredibly proud of the borough’s green spaces which provide so many with somewhere to relax, unwind and socialise within easy reach of the town centre."

Councillor Ian Manders, Portfolio Holder for Climate Action and Sustainable Transport added:

“Kingston salutes the Friends of Queen’s Promenade group who work so hard to look after the riverside so that it can be enjoyed by all.

"It shows what can be achieved when working together for a greener future.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
