Kingston encourages residents to remember local high streets on Small Business Saturday
Kingston Council is encouraging residents to show their support for local high streets the first weekend after all non-essential shops have reopened, and support small businesses.
Councillor John Sweeney, Portfolio Holder for Business at Kingston Council, said:
“Our local businesses have been working hard in preparation of the re-opening of our high streets. We’ve been working with the Chamber of Commerce, Kingston First and our other partners and local organisations to support businesses who are now being able to offer a warm and safe welcome back to Kingston's shoppers.
“It is anticipated that some Kingston businesses may choose to open later into the evenings - both for convenience, as well as making it easier and safer for people to access their favourite high street shops with extended shopping hours.
“Businesses are doing more than ever to ensure shoppers' safety, and we ask you, whether out Christmas shopping, or running your errands, to please continue keeping your distance, wear face coverings and follow the Tier 2 guidelines.
“Tomorrow, 5 December, is Small Business Saturday, where millions of customers and businesses across the UK come together to support shopping locally, whether online or in store. Small businesses have had a particularly challenging year. Where possible, do your Christmas shopping on your local high street, and walk or cycle instead of taking public transport or driving."
Since Wednesday 2 December Kingston, along with the rest of London, has been placed in Tier 2. This means people are only able to socialise with 6 other people outdoors, and not mix with other households indoors. Most shops and businesses have been able to re-open, but pubs, bars and hospitality venues that are open must close by 11pm. For non-essential retail across England, planning rules limiting opening hours have been eased to allow shops to be open for longer Monday to Saturday.
Kirsten Henly, Chief Executive, Kingston First said:
"Now more than ever, showing support for all our local small businesses is incredibly important. Across sectors and business types, from pubs and bars, to shops and restaurants, hairdressers and barbers, to events organisers and professional services, they all play such a vital role in Kingston's community. As the challenges of COVID-19 continue to affect so many businesses, this weekend is a good reminder for us all to support local businesses in the weeks ahead."
Forbes Low, CEO, Kingston Chamber of Commerce, said:
“As we head to the festive period, it is so important that we do our best to commit and support our local high street, retailers and hospitality. They have worked incredibly hard to allow us to shop safely and to keep the doors open. We can do our part by following the guidelines, showing respect and consideration for others. This is the time to appreciate our local high streets and all that they offer us.”
A range of grants are available to support businesses in the borough. The period that the borough was subject to tier 2 ‘Covid Alert Level: High’ restrictions, 17 October to 4 November. Our grants will cover independent businesses that were trading on 16 October, and have been severely impacted due to the restrictions on gatherings during this period.
