Supporting young people with SEND to thrive at Rainbow House
Kingston Council's Portfolio Holder for Children's Services including Education has visited Rainbow House.
It is a new overnight short breaks centre for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Councillor Diane White saw the expert support and specialist facilities at the centre at Moor Lane in Chessington. Kingston Council and its children's services provider Achieving for Children opened Rainbow House last May to provide short breaks for children and young people who may have multiple disabilities, complex medical needs and challenging behaviour, aged 8 to 17 years old.
It is part of the council's committment to ensuring all young people across the borough have the opportunities and support they need to thrive.
Councilllor White said:
"Ensuring children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities are supported and empowered to live happy and fulfilling lives is a priority for us at Kingston Council. Rainbow House provides a haven for the young people who stay here - and offers their families some time away from full time caring.
We’re especially proud of the fantastic input from young people and their families. Their feedback shaped and influenced the design of the building. Seeing it being used and enjoyed by them is wonderful."
