20mph speed limit rolls out in Surbiton
Communities in Surbiton are set to enjoy a safer, cleaner and greener neighbourhood, following the rollout of a local 20mph speed limit.
The speed limit reduction was approved at Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee in 2021.
The rollout, which includes additional signage and road markings, is underway and will continue over the next six weeks. The speed limit is legally in force from 7 March.
Cllr Alison Holt, Chair of the Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee, said:
"I'm so pleased that Surbiton is finally getting a 20mph speed limit. This is something that has been rolled out successfully in other London boroughs and I’m delighted it’s come to Kingston. By reducing the limit, it will make our streets safer and reduce both the risk and severity of any accidents.
“A 1 mph reduction in average speed reduces the accident rate by 5% and a 20 mph speed significantly lowers the risk of fatality. Together we’re making our neighbourhood safer, cleaner and greener.”
Private roads, or roads under the control of Transport for London (like the A3 and sections of the A243 and A240), will remain at the existing speed limit.
Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee approved the speed reduction plans on 30 June 2021 with further comments considered on 7 December 2021.
