FaulknerBrowns have a track record of delivering exceptional leisure centres nationally

Kingston Council has appointed market-leading architects FaulknerBrowns, who have a track record of delivering exceptional leisure centres, to design a leisure facility in Kingston that is accessible, provides high quality facilities, is environmentally sustainable, and celebrates the borough’s rich heritage and history.

Councillor Caroline Kerr, Leader of Kingston Council, said:

“The sudden closure of the much loved Kingfisher was unfortunate and completely unexpected, but the good news is that Kingston can now look forward to a new and improved leisure centre opening on the site in 2024. A centre which provides first-class facilities for everyone to enjoy and makes the most of the heritage and history of the surrounding area.

“World class specialists have now been recruited to make the new facility a reality. FaulknerBrowns, the architects designing the centre, were responsible for the fantastic Britannia Leisure Centre in Hackney and our vision is for something equally impressive here in Kingston.”

On top of this being the most sensible decision financially, the facilities at the Kingfisher do not reflect what people expect from a leisure centre these days – this is clear from feedback from residents about what they would like to see in a new leisure centre.

Since we started engagement in March this year, we have had an excellent response – with around 4,000 comments. The new leisure centre will incorporate many of the facilities people want to see, this includes two new pools, a splash deck and a soft play area for children, sports facilities, and a clip and climb wall.

In addition to providing amazing new facilities and much improved accessibility, we will create a range of welcoming green spaces for everyone to enjoy – from vibrant public places to play areas for families and quiet spots to sit and relax. The new leisure centre will be environmentally sustainable and connect to the neighbouring Kingston Museum and library, providing a whole range of leisure and cultural opportunities for residents to enjoy and making the most of the borough’s rich heritage and history.
