Kingston Council taking tougher actions on fly tipping
Innovative Internet of Things (IoT) camera sensors will be installed as part of the InnOvaTe Project in 10 housing sites across the borough to discourage fly tipping.
The new cameras will activate when motion is detected in areas that have persistent fly tipping problems.
Cllr John Sweeney, Portfolio Holder for Business and Leisure at Kingston Council, said:
“Sadly, fly-tipping has increased across London during the pandemic. While Kingston has the lowest fly-tipping rates in London there are several locations on housing estates that need attention. Using this technology we can have our eyes on those 'hotspots' 24/7. Residents expect the council to catch, fine and prosecute persistent fly-tippers. These cameras along with additional enforcement officers joining us soon will help fight against fly-tipping in Kingston.”
The cameras take still images when activated which are then sent to an enforcement officer for review. If fly tipping is seen to have occurred, the relevant team will be notified. No personal data will be stored or used unless necessary for enforcement purposes.
There are many ways you can help reduce fly tipping across Kingston:
- If you’re looking for a company to take away items like old furniture, building rubble or old appliances, make sure you choose one which is a licensed waste carrier. You can find one by calling the Environment Agency on 03708 506 506 or visiting their website.
- If donating to charity shops, please don’t leave items outside. Only donate when they are open and confirm that they can accept your donations.
- Use your kerbside recycling and rubbish collection service. Find out what you can put in your bins.
- Only put your bins and bags out on your collection day. Check your collection day.
- Use your Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC). Book a visit to the HRRC.
- Use your council’s bulky waste collection service to get rid of big items. Book a bulky waste collection.
- Report fly tipping on our website.
