Work begins on new public square set to transform New Malden
Delivery of New Malden’s new town square began this week, commencing 2 August, as part of the first phase of the Cocks Crescent development.
The proposal also includes a pocket park and pedestrian link, breathing new life into the area and providing a new space for communities to come together.
Design work and further consultation on the wider Cocks Crescent project, which you can read more about on the Kingston Council website, will be progressing in autumn with an aim to have planning consent and start on site by Summer 2023. There will be opportunities for residents to get involved from early 2022.
These exciting works begin amid news that a new town centre partnership group is forming for New Malden town centre, who have been successful in a stage 1 bid to the GLA's High Streets for All Challenge.
The GLA High Streets Challenge is a Mayor of London initiative, calling for high street partnerships to develop innovative high street strategies.
Cllr Simon Edwards, Chair of the Malden and Coombe Neighbourhood Committee, said:
“This is such an exciting time for New Malden and its residents, who will be able to feed in and shape the future of their town, both in the Cocks Crescent development and through the new town centre partnership group.
“With a new public square coming later this year and a state-of-the-art leisure centre planned for the wider development in the coming years, New Malden can look forward to a new, innovative space for its communities, and the beginning of Cocks Crescent’s potential being unlocked.”
The next stage is to expand and develop this partnership in preparation to co-design a town centre strategy for New Malden, which residents have the opportunity to get involved with. Design work is also starting on proposals to improve the Fountain Roundabout and nearby pocket park by the Environment Centre. Public engagement on this will take place next month.
The Rotary Club has also been recently successful in securing High Street Grant funding to make improvements to New Malden High Street such as new lighting and banners.
