Support for dementia and memory loss
Support for people with dementia, their carers, and anyone worried about memory loss.
Local help from the Alzheimer's Society
We work in partnership with the Kingston branch of the Alzheimer’s Society to support people with memory loss and their loved ones. Specialist advisers can support you if you’re affected by dementia, worried about a diagnosis, or caring for someone affected.
Speak to an adviser
Dementia advisers at the Alzheimer’s Society can work with you to identify your needs and how to meet them.
They can give you information and practical advice about things like:
- getting diagnosed
- caring strategies
- how to access social care
- remaining independent for as long as possible
- legal and financial advice about benefits and grants
- being appointed to make decisions for someone else (Lasting Power of Attorney)
Dementia-friendly things to do
A lot of places in Kingston run activity groups that bring people with dementia together. You can find a list of organisations that offer these groups on our partner site, Connected Kingston.

Support for carers
If you look after someone with dementia or memory loss, it’s important to look after yourself too. You can find help for carers on our website, including:
- making decisions on someone else’s behalf
- guidance on looking after yourself
- information about benefits and rights at work
- getting a carers’ assessment to help you find the right support to look after yourself
Carers groups
Kingston Alzheimer’s Society runs monthly informal groups for people who support someone living with dementia. It’s an opportunity to connect with others in a similar situation and share emotions, experiences, and practical information.
Carers support programme
You can join the Carer Information and Support Programme (CrISP) run by Kingston Alzheimer’s Society.
These are small group workshops for family or friends of a person with dementia. You can improve your knowledge, skills and understanding of dementia in a friendly and confidential environment.
If they have to stay in Kingston Hospital
If the person with dementia is in Kingston Hospital, the specialist dementia team can help you and the person you care for. They’ll keep you involved in the person’s care and make sure you can visit them regularly.

Becoming a dementia-friendly community with Dementia Friends

Any organisation can sign up to better understand the needs of people with dementia and commit to supporting the local community.
