Reporting a problem with your rented property

Find out how to report a problem with your rented property

You should discuss any problems you are having with your landlord first. This includes any disrepair or health and safety issues, in your private rented home. You can put your concerns in writing.

Report a problem

If your landlord has taken no action you can then contact the our environmental health team.

Make a private sector housing enquiry

What we can do

We have enforcement powers to ensure landlords maintain properties. They should be free from hazards and disrepair.

We can arrange to:

  • carry out an inspection of your property, and
  • work with your landlord to ensure the property is an acceptable standard

We can take enforcement action to make sure the repairs are completed.

Housing Association Properties

We will not investigate housing association property complaints.

You will need to follow the housing associations complaint procedure. You can then take your complaint to the Housing Ombudsman.

This approach is consistent with advice offered by:

  • Housing Associations themselves

  • the Housing Ombudsman
