Living in a cold home can put your health at risk. Warm Home Better Health is a one stop shop established to tackle fuel poverty which can reduce seasonal deaths and hospital admissions. This is administered by our not-for-profit partners Thinking Works.

Thinking Works are able to help any vulnerable residents but the following groups are particularly important:

  • Those aged over 65

  • Those with respiratory disease

  • Those with cardiovascular disease

  • Those with any other long-term limiting illness

  • Low income families with young children

  • Households spending 10% or more of their income on energy

Following an initial assessment, Thinking Works can provide one or more of the following services:

Home

  • Advice on energy bills and keeping warm and dry in the home

  • Energy Doctor - visits and free energy saving measures in your home

  • Help to access available heating and insulation grants

  • Telecare and Community Alarm Service - helping maintain safety and independence in the home

  • Fire safety check - free checks and smoke detector installations from the Fire Brigade

  • Home security check - advice on securing the home and dealing with bogus callers

  • Private sector housing support - helping to improve conditions for private tenants

Financial

  • Referrals for benefits check - making sure that residents claim all the benefits they're entitled to

  • Advice and assistance with gas, electricity and water debt

  • Help to access support with other debts and financial problems

  • Referrals for Disabled Facilities Grants - funding for adaptations in the home

  • Warm Home Discount - £140 government energy bill discount scheme for people in receipt of certain benefits

  • Water bill discount - Up to 50% off water bills for eligible low income households

Health

  • Flu jab - ensuring that eligible residents are vaccinated

  • Referrals for NHS Health Checks - free checks for those aged 35-74

  • Advice and information on useful local health and wellbeing services

  • Referrals for airTEXT - air pollution alerts for vulnerable individuals

  • Referrals for stop smoking services - help smokers quit

General support interventions

  • Vulnerable utility customers register - help in the event of power, gas or water cuts

  • London Taxicard - subsidised taxi journeys for people with limited mobility

  • Befriending services - reducing social isolation
