Care technology

Find out about alarms, sensors and monitoring systems to help you stay safe in your home.

Devices for safety and independence at home

Care technology, also known as telecare, involves various types of sensors or alarms installed in your home to help you stay safe.

If you’re facing a problem or get into an accident, these devices can alert a family member of your choice or let the emergency services know immediately.

Different types of alarms and sensors

There are lots of different types of alarms and sensors available, including:

  • pendant alarms that you can wear and use to call for help in an emergency
  • exit sensors that alert someone if you leave the house
  • environmental sensors that monitor carbon dioxide levels and detect water leaks in your home

Getting alarms and sensors

To get care technology from Kingston Council, you'll need to have a care needs assessment

This assessment works out if you're eligible for Council-funded care services and whether care technology is suitable for you.

To get care technology for a child under 18, contact the Integrated Service for Disabled Children and Young People.

How much it costs

If you’re eligible and we recommend care technology, you may still have to pay something towards the cost. How much you may need to contribute is worked out in a financial assessment, which we’ll do with you after your care needs assessment.

Buying your own sensors and alarms

If you cannot get care technology from Kingston or you prefer to buy them yourself, we’ve partnered with Argenti to offer care technology for Kingston residents.

To get advice on which sensors and alarms are right for you, you can talk to Argenti about your care needs. They'll help you decide on the best care technology packages for you.
