Grants - standard rules and conditions

How to apply

Email the private sector team to request an application form.

To apply you must meet all the following criteria, you must:

  • be 18 years or over
  • be a UK citizen or applying through a registered UK company
  • have no outstanding debts with us
  • not have had Council action taken against the property you’re seeking a grant for
  • undertake a financial means test
  • submit a complete grant application
  • be an adult applying on behalf of a child - when applying for a disabled facilities grant for a child

With your grant application, you must usually send:

  • a signed and dated application form
  • quotes from three different contractors - no more than six months old – that itemise and cost works. If a contractor doesn’t have a VAT number, they must provide a signed declaration to confirm their annual turnover doesn’t exceed the VAT threshold
  • any quotes for supplementary services, such as architect or surveyor fees if they’re included in the grant applied for
  • a signed owner’s certificate and or a landlord permission form, or  a signed tenant’s certificate (as applicable to the grant) (Our team will provide owners and tenants certificates and Landlord permission forms.)

If you plan to carry out the work yourself

You can carry out the work yourself as long as you are competent to carry out the works. You must be able to show that you are accredited with a relevant trade body like NICEIC, Gas Safe or Federation of Master Builders. If you do the work yourself we will only cover the cost of materials through the grant.

Please note that you must not carry out any work prior to receipt of approval of the grant from the council, as no grants will be paid on works already started or completed.
