If you’re a social housing resident, enter our gardening competition and win prizes for your private garden, communal garden, hanging basket and vegetables.

How to enter

We’re running a gardening photo competition for our social housing residents, to find the most colourful gardens and best and wonkiest vegetables grown in your gardens, pots or tubs!

You can enter as an individual or as a group. It is one entry per resident only.

You will need to submit:

  • a 2024 photo showing your private garden, communal garden or hanging basket 
  • the category you want to enter
  • your contact details

Entries close on 12 July 2024.

Categories

You can enter into the following categories, including a new category for those vegetable growers amongst you:

  • Best Kept Individual Garden 
  • Best Kept Communal Garden
  • Best Hanging Basket 
  • Best Basket of 3 vegetables and salad - bring a basket with the vegetable that you've grown and that you're most proud of whether it's your longest runner bean, biggest potato or curliest carrot
  • Best Basket of 3 wonkiest vegetables - for our young veggie growers 18 and below, including carrots and runner beans

Best Basket judging (vegetables)

If you’re entering the Best Basket categories, you’ll need to bring your basket to main Guildhall for 10am on the 1 August 2024 to be judged.

What you can win 

You can win up to £50 worth of gardening vouchers.

 If you enter as a group and win, the vouchers will be shared. 

The winners will be contacted by July 2024 using the contact details you gave us when you entered. You will also be invited to an awards ceremony presented by Kingston Council officials.

Gardening Bloom 2024 - Terms and Conditions

Eligibility

The Gardening Competition is only open to all registered social housing Royal Borough of Kingston (Kingston Council) residents aged 18 years or over, except employees or members of Kingston Council or affiliated / third party contractors.

The Wonkiest Vegetable competition is open to anyone under the age of 18.

Kingston Council residents who fulfil these criteria can enter either as an individual or as part of a group.

Only one entry is allowed per individual. Only one entry is allowed per group. You cannot submit twice as an individual and in a group. Only one entry per resident. Any group must submit under a group name and nominate one person to be the point of contact in their online entry form. That contact point person will be responsible for notifying all other group members regarding the group’s progress in the competition.

Each individual or group entry must be in relation to either a resident’s own garden, and/or communal gardens on a Kingston Council housing estate, and/or a hanging basket of real not plastic flowers that can be displayed internally or externally within the home.

One entry can provide photos covering the garden and/or hanging basket relevant to that individual or group entrant’s gardening work. For example, one entry (whether by an individual resident or a group) could submit photos regarding their own garden and/or communal area and/or a hanging basket/s.

You cannot enter the competition if you are employees of Kingston Council or its holding or subsidiary companies.

You cannot enter the competition if you are employees of agents or suppliers of Kingston Council or its holding or subsidiary companies, who are professionally connected with the competition or its administration. You cannot enter the competition if you are a Leaseholder who rents out their properties. In entering the competition, you confirm that you are eligible to do so and eligible to claim the prize. Kingston Council may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter or undertake tenancy checks to verify your tenancy status.

Kingston Council will not accept entries:

  • that have been altered, reconstructed, forged or tampered with
  • that are incomplete
  • where the conduct is contrary to the spirit or intention of the prize competition
  • automatically generated by a computer
  • completed by third parties or in bulk
  • that include photocopies and not originals
  • where a person has taken photos of someone else's garden
  • where the garden is not on council estate land

Uploading photos

The photo will need to be taken in 2024. Photos taken in 2023 will not be accepted. When uploading or contributing an image (photograph, photo, picture) to Kingston Council’s website, you agree to the following terms and conditions. If you do not agree, please do not upload or contribute an image in any way.

You acknowledge that you own the copyright and have full rights to copy, transmit and display the image in any media on this website.

You acknowledge that you own the copyright, and have full rights to copy, transmit and display the image in any media, on Kingston Council’s website or any other.

You acknowledge that the image does not infringe on any copyright, property right, trademark or any other applicable right.

The photos for individual Gardens are of your own Garden. The photos of communal Gardens are defined and set within a Kingston Council estate, areas that include public highways that are not council land will void your entry.

By uploading an image to Kingston Council’s website, either by uploading the image or sending it to us by email or by any other means, (i) you grant Kingston Council a perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to use, copy, modify, reproduce, print, display, distribute, post, transmit and publish the image and any text included in the image, on this site or any other site run by or owned by Kingston Council and (ii) you certify that any identifiable person appearing in the image authorises Kingston Council to use, copy, modify, reproduce, print, display, distribute, post, transmit and publish the image; and (iii) Kingston Council may choose to seek compensation from you if Kingston Council experiences financial loss from any claims, losses and expenses, including legal fees arising directly from your breach of these terms and conditions. You give Kingston Council permission to use the image for any promotional purposes whatsoever, such as using the image in its data feeds to other websites.

You agree that Kingston Council may at some stage watermark the larger versions of your image on the site with the words Kingston Council or something similar, to deter piracy. You will still remain the copyright holder.

By deciding to enter the competition you confirm that you have read, understand and accept that the competition is on the basis of these terms and conditions. Kingston Council reserves the right to refuse entry, or refuse to award the prize to anyone in breach of these terms and conditions.

Kingston Council reserves the right to revise or update the terms and conditions at any time without prior notice. You are therefore advised to review these terms regularly. The competition winners will be selected by the judging panel. The decision made by the judging panel will be final.

You agree that although Kingston Council will endeavour to credit you as the author/copyright holder of any image you upload/contribute, there will be some instances where this will not be possible or not be appropriate, such as where we show small thumbnail size versions of the image, or where we use the image for promotional purposes.

You agree that Kingston Council cannot be held responsible for the misuse or abuse of any image you upload to this site.

Vegetable Category

Bring your vegetable baskets to Kingston’s main Guildhall for 10am on the 1 August 2024 to be judged. 

The Prizes

Gardening Vouchers, following the judging panel’s decision. If the winner is a group entry, the prize will still be capped at £50.00 total of gardening vouchers for the whole group.

The winning individual or group will be invited to an awards ceremony to receive the award, presented by Kingston Council officials.

The Competition winner’s name may be required to feature in Kingston Council’s publication platforms. They may also be asked to share their experience of how they maintain their garden. The prize does include delivery to the winner’s home at a Kingston Address. Delivery will be arranged.

Prizes are subject to availability. Kingston Council reserves the right to substitute the prize with a prize of equal or greater value. The winner cannot negotiate the nature or value of the prize with Kingston Council.

Winner Announcement

Kingston Council will contact the finalists in July 2024, using the contact details, email & phone) provided with the entry. The decision of Kingston Council is final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.

Kingston Council will make all reasonable efforts to contact the winner. If the winner cannot be contacted or is not available within 7 days, Kingston Council reserves the right to offer the prize to the next eligible entrant selected from the entries that were received before Friday 12 July 2024 at 11.59pm. The Prize is not negotiable or transferable. Kingston Council does not take responsibility if you are not able to take up the prize.

Limitation of Liability

Insofar as is permitted by law, Kingston Council, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winner or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prize except where it is caused by the negligence of Kingston Council, its agents or distributors or that of their employees. Your statutory rights are not affected.

Ownership of Competition Prize entries and Intellectual Property Rights

Kingston Council does not claim any rights ownership in your competition entry. You own the copyright of your submission. Unless written permission is given, Kingston Council strictly forbids any resident entries to use its web site and publication platforms for commercial or non-commercial purposes.

Data Protection and Publicity

By entering the competition, you agree that any personal information provided by you with the competition prizes entry may be held and used only by Kingston Council or its agents and suppliers to administer the competition.

General

By deciding to enter the competition you confirm that you have read, understand and accept that the competition is on the basis of these terms and conditions.

If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions Kingston Council, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to exclude you from participating in the competition. Kingston Council reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel or amend the competition where it becomes necessary to do so.

Kingston Council reserves the right to revise or update the terms and conditions at any time without prior notice. You are therefore advised to review these terms regularly. The competition winners will be selected by the judging panel. The decision made by the judging panel will be final.

These terms and conditions are governed by English Law, and the parties submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. If any entrants to this promotion wish to take court proceedings, then they must do this within the courts in the United Kingdom.

The prize may not be claimed by a third party on a winner’s behalf.
