Discovery of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)

Unexploded ordnance are explosive weapons that did not explode when they were employed and still pose a risk of detonation. Risk is greater in areas, such as Kingston, that were heavily bombed during World War 2.  Items of ordnance tend to be discovered during construction work and on building sites. It is not uncommon for residents to be evacuated temporarily when UXO is discovered. The disruption could last several hours or days.

Impacts: Traffic diversions, evacuations, duration (hours/days), loss of or damage to home/building/work location

What residents can  do:
Plan where you will go if you have to evacuate and how will you get there
Plan what to take with you if you have to evacuate (medicines, money, mobile phone, chargers)
Plan how to let other family members know
Have a home emergency plan, know where you and your family can relocate to, if not at a rest centre
Ensure high school children know alternative routes to school, home and to your chosen relocation site.

What VCSE can do:
Plan alternative travel routes to and from work and to/from vulnerable clients
Plan alternative travel method to and from work and to/from vulnerable clients
Offer use of buildings for rest centres or emergency response purposes.
Have alternative ways to access your key data
Have a buddy/mutual aid agreement to use a partners building in an emergency
Alert the emergency services to vulnerable residents within the evacuation zone.
Check if your insurance covers you for UXO damage & costs
