Introduction to the course

This qualification is for those looking to develop their knowledge of Special Educational Needs.

It is aimed at professionals already working in (or planning to work in) various supportive roles including:

- Teaching Assistant or SEN Teaching Assistant (including primary, secondary, special schools, and colleges)
- Foster Carer
- Children and Families Support Worker
- Learning Mentor

Gaining this qualification provides an opportunity for you to develop your career by deepening your knowledge of SEN and to have this knowledge formally recognised in an official qualification.

What will I learn?

The qualification covers:

- The development of children and young people
- Professional practice in special educational needs service
- How to support children and young people to achieve learning potential
- How to support children and young people with speech, language and communication needs
- How to support disabled children and young people and those with specific requirements
- And much more

What are the entry requirements?

You must be aged 19 or over (as at 31st August 2024) and be a UK resident.

You will need a sufficient level of English to be able to follow the curriculum and complete any course work.

Please also be sure you have enough time each week to attend all classes and to complete any homework assignments outside of class.

If you live within Greater London, you will need to have the right to live in the UK for at least 12 months from the start date of the course.

If you live outside of the Greater London area, you will need to have lived in the UK for the past three years and also have the right to live in the UK for the duration of your course.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

Please bring a pen, note paper or note book, and a folder to store any handouts.

This course has some elements delivered online, so you will need access to a computer or laptop and an internet connection. (Please note that a smartphone or tablet will not be suitable)

If you do not have the necessary IT equipment, you can still apply for the course as there may be opportunity for equipment loan depending on your personal circumstances.

What can I do after my course has finished?

With a Principles of Special Educational Needs Level 3 Certificate, you can pursue career roles including:

- Teaching Assistant (with a specialism in SEN, you could work as a TA supporting the learning of children / adults with SEN)

- Learning Mentor (providing individualised support to students with learning difficulties or disabilities; assisting with their academic or social-emotional needs)

- Communication Support Worker (helping those with communication difficulties, using various strategies and techniques to facilitate effective communication)

- Foster Carer

- Children and Families Support Worker


When combined with additional qualifications or experience, this course can help you gain employment in these areas:

- Special Educational Needs Teacher (alongside a teaching qualification, you could specialise in supporting children or adults with SEN in mainstream or special schools)

- Early Years Educator (alongside a qualification in Early Years, you could work with young children, supporting their development and learning with a focus on SEN)

- Special Needs Assessment Officer (using specialist skills and knowledge to assess the needs of children and/or adults)
