Introduction to the course

This talk looks at life in Anglo-Saxon England at the time of King Aethelstan, 1100 years ago. It will provide an overview of what we know about this time period, often referred to as the Dark Ages, and discuss the importance of the role of Kingston-upon-Thames as a centre of royal power. The talk will last approximately 45 minutes and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

What will I learn?

This talk will provide an outline of what life was like in the "Dark Ages"; among other topics, we will discuss the origins of Kingston-upon-Thames as a centre of royal power, the structure of society, the place of religion and the art & culture of the Anglo-Saxons.
