- Introduction to the course
-
Tai Chi is a series of slow flowing and controlled movements with gentle breathing in a specific and precise sequence. Tai Chi aids movement, coordination, memory and breathing. Tai Chi is both a form of exercise and meditation. This class will learn the LAM Style Tai Chi Chuan Short Form sequence and a series of associated exercises that assist in the overall learning of The Form. A Tai Chi practice involves slow-motion flowing movements, and with that comes a cadre of health benefits, too, including better balance, mobility, and coordination. Tai Chi (also called Tai Chi Chuan or Tai Ji Quan) is a mind-body exercise that combines movements, meditation, and deep breathing. Those with intermediate knowledge will learn and improve on the Long Form sequence.
- What will I learn?
-
The primary focus of the class is either the LAM Style Tai Chi Chuen Short Form or Long Form (depending on experience). The movements accompanied by natural breathing will exercise the lungs, muscles, tissues, nervous system, blood circulation; in fact all of the body's organs and functions. It increases energy, creates focus, aids wellbeing and assists with physical health. Tai Chi is also a form of meditation, which with practice will help you control your mind and to become more alert and aware of all things. It will also relax and calm the mind, easing worries and nervous tension. Tai Chi will improve balance, posture and it increases internal and external strength, thus aiding overall movement. You will also learn a number of Tai Chi walking exercises, The 8 Fine Treasures (Baduanjin qigong) and also cover a series of warming up, warming down and breathing exercises.
- What are the entry requirements?
-
As a beginner, there are no specific entry requirements other than a desire to have a go and take part. Any person of any age can learn Tai Chi. Those wishing to learn or improve the Long Form will need to be able to perform the Short Form on their own as a minimum.
- What do I need to bring with me to class?
-
Comfortable loose clothing suitable for gentle movements. Do not wear tight belts or bands around the waist. Shoes suitable for gentle exercise. No special shoes are needed but they should provide support and be comfortable and not too hard. Tai Chi should not be practised in bare feet. Some people like to have a change of shoes from those worn when travelling to the class. It is advisable to have a top layer sweatshirt or thin fleece that can be worn during warm ups and removed as needed as the class progresses. It is advisable to bring a bottle with drinking water to the class.
- What can I do after my course has finished?
-
Eventually after practice and being able to complete the Short Form on your own from memory, you may be able to progress to learning the Long Form. Typically to become proficient in the Short Form it will take 3 terms worth of classes and your own practice outside classes.
