Introduction to the course

This is an intensive GCSE mathematics course for learners who are interested in developing their mathematical skills and gaining a GCSE maths qualification.

A GCSE maths qualification can open up new opportunities to study at a higher education institution or gain employment which requires GCSE maths.

This course has two sessions per week: an online lesson on Mondays 9:30 - 11:00 and an in-person lesson at the Hook Centre in Chessington on Thursdays 9:30 - 12:00

What will I learn?

The GCSE mathematics syllabus covers topics in five broad areas: Number, Algebra, Ratio, Geometry and Probability & Statistics. You will also learn study skills and exam skills to help you achieve success.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to have a good level of maths ability (such as that gained from a Level 2 Functional Skills course) or from working in an environment that requires a good level of numeracy.

You will be given an initial assessment to check you are at the necessary level. If you are assessed as working at a lower level, you may be offered a Functional Skills English course if spaces are available.

You should you be resident in the UK, aged 19+, and not already have a pass grade (A - C / 4 - 9) at GCSE maths.

This is an intensive course and you will be required to complete homework assignments each week. For this reason, you must be motivated to learn and be committed to attending fully for the entire academic year.

You will also need a basic level of digital skills in order to access the online elements of the course.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

Please bring a pen, note paper or note book, and a folder to store any handouts.

This course has some elements delivered online, so you will need access to a computer or laptop and an internet connection. (Please note that a smartphone or tablet will not be suitable)

If you do not have the necessary IT equipment, you can still apply for the course as there may be opportunity for equipment loan depending on your personal circumstances.

What can I do after my course has finished?

Gaining a GCSE maths qualification can lead on to further study at a higher education institution or employment that requires GCSE maths.
