Course name
English Functional Skills: Level 2 (Spring / Summer Term Intensive)
Course code

Introduction to the course

You will learn real-world skills to help you use English more effectively in the workplace or daily life.

These courses are available at Entry, Level 1, and Level 2 levels.

At the end of the course you will gain a certificate which is highly valued by employers.

Functional skills English can also be a gateway to many vocational courses such as childcare and teaching assistant, and is a progression route onto a GCSE English course at Kingston Adult Education.

We know that not everyone had the best time at school, and for many of us, the idea of returning to learning as an adult can be worrying. Our tutors understand this and offer support and guidance throughout. As part of your course, you will learn study skills to help you gain new confidence in your abilities.

What will I learn?

You will:

- Learn how to use language appropriately for different situations such as when at work or with friends
- Learn how to speak more clearly and confidently
- Improve your reading skills with a variety of different types of text
- Learn spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence construction to help you write with better accuracy
- Practice different styles of writing such as formal letters, emails and forms

You will also learn study skills and exam skills to help you achieve success.

What are the entry requirements?

To be eligible for a funded English or maths course, please be sure that:

- You are resident in the UK and aged 19+
- You do not already have a Grade 4 / C or above in GCSE English if you are applying for an English course or a Grade 4 / C in GCSE Maths if you are applying for a maths course

There will be homework and self-study assignments. Please be sure you will have enough time each week to attend all classes and to complete the homework assignments outside of class.

You will also need a basic level of digital skills in order to access the online elements of the course.

Please note that our Functional Skills English and GCSE English courses are designed for learners whose first Language is English, or ESOL learners with a good command of spoken English.

If English is not your first language:

We strongly recommend completing an ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) Level 2 course before taking a Functional Skills or GCSE course.

If you would like more information or advice about the difference between Functional Skills and ESOL courses, please email skillsforworkandlife@kingston.gov.uk

What do I need to bring with me to class?

Please bring a pen, note paper or note book, and a folder to store any handouts.

This course has some elements delivered online, so you will need access to a computer or laptop and an internet connection. (Please note that a smartphone or tablet will not be suitable)

If you do not have the necessary IT equipment, you can still apply for the course as there may be opportunity for equipment loan depending on your personal circumstances.

What can I do after my course has finished?

Most learners can continue to the next Functional Skills level. For learners who complete all the levels, we offer the opportunity to move up to GCSE English or take a vocational course.
