Volunteering opportunities
Make a stag beetle palace
To join in the coronation celebrations and to mark the importance of the environment to His Majesty King Charles III, and our royal borough, we are delighted to invite members of the public to join Elliot Newton, our Biodiversity Officer, to volunteer and make stag beetle palaces.
Stag beetles don’t move far from where they emerge. Although males can fly up to 500m, most female stag beetles don’t travel more than 20m and return to where they emerged to lay eggs. This means populations are vulnerable to becoming isolated and if there isn’t enough dead wood nearby, dying out all together. You can help by building a log pile in your garden to ensure that there is a good supply of suitable dead wood nearby for females to lay their eggs in.
You can join Elliot at Surbiton Wood on 6 May 11:00. For more information, please email elliot.newton@kingston.gov.uk.
The Big Help Out
The Big Help Out, which will take place on the bank holiday of the Coronation (8 May), is a voluntary initiative which aims to raise awareness of volunteering and provide opportunities for people to offer support in their communities.
The app seeks to provide a quick, clear and easy way for individuals to find and select suitable opportunities. The Big Help Out is supported by some of the UK’s biggest volunteer organisations, including the Scouts and the Royal Voluntary Service, but it is open to all volunteer-involving organisations regardless of size.
Bank holiday opening hours will be announced shortly.
