Housing and care home options
Supported living
Housing for people living with a learning disability, mental health condition or physical disability who want to live independently but need extra care and support.
How supported living works
Supported living provides accommodation with care and support and aims to help you live independently and learn life skills.
Care and support
The care and support you need will be decided before you move in.
You could get help with:
- cooking and shopping
- socialising with friends
- making repairs around the home
- managing money and bills
- keeping your home clean and tidy
- going to work or college
- getting a job
- personal care
Accommodation
Supported housing homes are usually shared by a small group of people who also receive help and support.
You will have your own bedroom in a shared house, flat or apartment and share the kitchen and living space. You can also live on your own if that suits your needs.
You will be eligible for supporting living if you:
- are over the age of 18
- are living in Kingston
- have a care needs assessment that says supported living is right for you
How to apply
If you haven’t already had one, you will need to have a care needs assessment. This helps us to find the care you need.
If you already have a social worker, you can speak to them about moving into a supported living home and if it's the best option for you.
Help from the council
After your care assessment, you will be asked to complete a financial assessment to work out if you can get a personal budget to help pay for your care and support.
You could also be eligible to claim housing benefit to help pay for your rent.
What you’ll pay
If you’re thinking of moving into supported living, you will need to consider the costs and how you will pay for them.
- the rent
- household bills like gas, water and electricity
- food
- personal items, like clothes and toiletries
If you’re in shared accommodation, you’ll pay a share of the bills.
